"Doc" enrolled in dental school in 1870 and attended his first lecture session in 1870-1872. Doc's required thesis was on "Disease of the Teeth". He served his required two years apprenticeship under Dr. L.F. Frank. On March 1, 1872, the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery in Philadelphia conferred the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery upon twenty-six men, one of whom was John Henry Holliday. (Thus the nickname "Doc".) Upon completion of his training and graduation, Dr. Holliday opened an office with a Dr. Arthur C. Ford in Atlanta in 1872.
Shortly after starting this practice, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and according to many doctors, he did not have long to live. With the advise that drier climate may add a few months to his life, he headed out west. In October of 1873, "Doc" found himself in Dallas, Texas. He started working along with Dr. John A. Seegar. Shortly afterward, due to his illness and coughing attacks, his patient numbers declined. It became apparent that "Doc" had to find other means of support. He quickly realized he had a natural ability as a sporting man (gambler).
The following staory is how the tin type was found and its authentification; I purchased an old car 15 years ago, for it's potential classic value. This car was full of trash. During the cleaning process I came across an envelope and in this was an old tintype photograph. Not knowing anything other then this being an old tintype photograph of two men, it sat in my home for well over a decade. A friend of mine, Bob Harrison, who is also a registered historian, caught a glimpse of this photo and asked..."Where did you get this picture of "Doc" Holliday?" The rest is history.
After three years of authentication of this tintype photo, it was established though biometric facial recognition that this is the only known photograph in the world of "Doc" Holliday in his chosen profession of dentistry. This is truly a trash to treasure story.
