PHILIPPINE LANTAKA. A bronze barrel cannon, which was used as a swivel gun, mounted on merchant vessels traveling the Malay Archipelago. Thirty-two inch long \bronze barrel, with a one inch bore in excellent condition. Thirty-eight inch overall length. With original swivel and mellow patina overall. This cannon makes a great gun room display. The better quality miniature personal cannons were cast in Holland, Europe and England starting in the 1600's. They were finer in detail, design, and quality then those that were made in the Spice Islands. Signal cannons were used as presentation pieces, in personal protection for close in fighting, as a signaling device, or as a form of currency. The quality of this casting indicates that its origin was in one of the European foundries. This cannon was made in the first quarter of the 20th Century.
