A finely made German side -by- side percussion double rifle. This part octagonal, part round 33 ½" barrel is approximately 60 caliber, evenly patinated finish, and retaining a decent bore. The right lock plate in marked "L ANSCHUTZ" and 'ZELLA". The Anschutz family spawned over two centuries of prolific gun makers from Zella-Mehlis, a Duchy of Gotha, Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. The finely grained and carved half stock is in excellent condition, featuring fine checkering on the fore end and wrist. The wood surrounding the lock plates terminate in high relief carved "beaver tails", the engraved tang pointing toward a smaller beaver tail. There is a raised carved left-hand cheek piece, with "c" scrolls is reminiscent of the finely carved Kentucky rifles made by the German immigrants of the 18th and early 19th centuries. The forward trigger guard finial depicts an urn filled with flowers, a feature used by later Philadelphia makers, including Henry Deringer. The balance of the brass trigger guard is engraved with a floral motif, as is the upper tang of the brass butt plate. A set trigger for the right barrel is provided but, none for the left barrel.Three brass thimbles, two of which have been re-soldered, held the now-missing ramrod. The middle thimble and front of the trigger guard have provisions for sling swivels, now missing. It should be noted that the sling swivels and ramrod are easily replaced without harming the antique value of this example of the Kentucky rifle precursor.
