A J.P. Sauer Drilling, 16 Ga., 8x57 Jaeger Rimmed. The action is a scalloped boxlock with side clips, burnished color-case finish,extractors, non-automatic safety, rifle selector, and the 23 5/8” barrels have a full length solid rib with engraved matte finish , a mechanical flip up rear (rifle) sight that pops up when the selector is moved forward and a fine front bead. The rifle selector on the top tang appear to work in the following manner: Back position, rifle safe, shotgun barrels active, forward position, front trigger fires rifle, rear trigger fires left barrel of shotgun. Sliding safety operating all barrels on left side, mid-wrist. Button on top must be depressed before selector can be moved to rifle mode. The trigger guard is black buffalo horn. The chokes measure .639(l),.649(r). There is a claw type scope base.
Markings: The underside of the barrels show an 838 (August 1938) date mark, various nitro proof marks and designations as pictured. Serial number 282606 appears on the watertable. "Special Gewehrlufstahl" (special german steel) appears under the forend on the right side of the barrel. "Krupp Luftstahl" appears on both shotgun barrels," 8X57 J.R." is engraved on the midrib. The receiver is lightly engraved in acanthus motifs.
Condition:All the bores are bright and the rifling is crisp. There is light pitting on the receiver, the finish is case colors to white, the checkering a double border diamond pattern on the wrist and forend. The buttplate appears replaced, there are numerous bruises and scratches on the stock and forend and there areas of finish loss, light scratches and nicks on the barrels. The stock shows nice figure and flame. The forend has been cracked and repaired. Some damage to screw heads and softening of the checkering is evident.
